Rye IPA Batch 3 Centennial Chinook Citra
Over the last 2 or 3 years I have had some Rye IPA craft beers. I have wanted to make make one to see what I could do with this style of beer. I do like the spice you get from Rye. I was not sure how Chinook would do in a beer like this as I make an all Chinook IPA and I really do not get a spice taste. I did make a brew day overview video just to show you how I make my small batches for testing you can check that out here.
For my third Rye IPA all grain batch I used the following recipe
2 LBS 1 oz 2-Row
5.5 oz White Wheat
5.5 oz Rye Malt
3.7 oz Flaked Rye
.28 oz Centennial @ 60 mins
.28 oz Centennial @ 5 mins
.28 oz Chinook @ 5 mins
US-05 Yeast was used
.24 oz Centennial Dry Hop 7 Days
.12 oz Chinook Dry Hop 7 Days
.12 oz Citra Dry Hop 7 Days
Tasting 1
Color: Light burnt orange and hazy
Smell: Passion fruit with a hint of spice.
Taste: The body is a little lighter than Rye IPA 1 and 2. The ABV is a little higher so that would be why the body is a little lighter. The fruit taste stands out in this beer. The bitterness is a little higher also. You do get some Rye Fruit from this one. The spice from the rye does keep going up as you drink this.
Overall: I think the citra hops in this homebrew added a lot of fruit smell to this one. Its only .12 oz but it took over. I dont think the fruit goes very well with the spice from the rye and maybe the chinook. I wouldnt make a full batch of this.
Tasting 2
Color: Hazy golden yellow
Smell: Wheat citrus
Taste: Wheat citrus hint of spice in the back
Overall: The wheat stands out in this homebrew. I was thinking this one would have more fruit in the taste from the citra. I wouldnt make a 5 gallon batch of this.
